Threads – A Solo Show by Chih-Jui DiDi Lin

The progress of a story from the formation of the content, to the expressions of words, and the presentation of the physical performance, is an ambiguous and complicated journey.

The origin of a story is usually either from fact or fiction, but through the transmission of different tones and words, along with the transformation and support from a range of physical behaviours or performances, a story can develop to become a complex superimposed and multidimensional product.

A key interest in my work is interrogating the structure of the story and reviewing and re-configuring the conventional narrative structure to create new and often unexpected results. By editing a range of events and stories together, and combining them with different voices and physical performances, the resulting works play on the gaps and contradictions that occur between narrative and performance and investigate the relationship between these two integral elements.

This first solo exhibition gathers together stories and performances that I have been collecting throughout different stages and times. Via various performance postures, behaviours, spoken words and surroundings, I aim to present a diverse, and integrated narrative through a video format. In addition to displaying the ambiguous course between the original fact, and the re-telling of the story, the exhibition also aims to explore the viewer’s susceptibility and attraction towards the so-called “authenticity” and “plot climax” under layers of disguises and delusions.

Lin, Chih-Jui DiDi was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1979. She earned a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, Canada (2005) and an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London, United Kingdom (2007). Lin applies video as her major means to record and manipulate the impression of her performances and to explore the various outcomes resulting from the integration between narrative and performance. Lin has had numerous exhibitions in Taiwan and abroad, recent exhibition include: Noisy Memorial Hall, 435 International Arts Village, Banciao, Taiwan (2010); Young Art Taipei, Sunworld Dynasty Hotel, Taipei, Taiwan (2010); Human Resources, V22 Wharf Road Project Space, London, UK (2008); Variety Night, The Montague Arms, London, UK(2008); The Longest Day of the Year Film Festival, Whitstable Biennale-Satellite Programme, Whitstable, UK (2008); Visual Deflection, Roxy Bar & Screen, London, UK (2007), and Open Screening, Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK.
